The variability of the earth-rotation vector relative to the body of the planet or in inertial space is caused by the gravitational torque exerted by the Moon, Sun and planets, displacements of matter in different parts of the planet and other excitation mechanisms. The observed oscillations can be interpreted in terms of mantle elasticity, earth flattening, structure and properties of the core-mantle boundary, rheology of the core, underground water, oceanic variability, and atmospheric variability on time scales of weather or climate. The understanding of the coupling between the various layers of our planet is also a key aspect of this research.

For several decades, long-range aircraft have used Inertial Navigation Systems/Inertial Reference Systems as sources for position information and as the primary sources for orientation information (pitch/bank/yaw/heading).
This video demonstrates the alignment process of a Honeywell IRS as it carefully measures the slow rotation of the earth to determine the aircraft's latitude and direction to the geographic north pole. The IRS uses Earth rotation to calculate an accurate latitude which it will use to cross-check the initial position that is supplied during the align mode for reasonableness.

The orbital path of the international space station is constantly changing. Using a ISS tracker app, this little clip I made, shows how the path is changing due to the rotation of the earth. ~
An orbit is like a gyroscope. It keeps the plane of motion in the same orientation with respect to the fixed stars. The ISS is on such an orbit, but from the view point of the earth the orbital path changes constantly. This can only be due to the earth rotating below the ISS.
