Refraction at the Transcontinental Triangulation of the American Arc of Parallel

The measurements done at the Transcontinental Triangulation and the American Arc of the Parallel (PDF), published in 1900, can be used to calculate the prevailing refraction at the stations, assuming a Globe or Flat Earth model. The calculated prevailing temperature gradients show that the required refraction for the observations and measurements are physically impossible assuming a Flat Earth (red column).

Description

In the table above the reduced zenith angles were used. This are the original observed angle corrected to the base of the stations. The targets were mounted on big structures and the thodolites were commonly not at the same height as the targets. This requires a correction, called reduction of the zenith angles to be comparable.

Blue numbers indicate values where there are no measurements. If a pressure at a station is missing then I used the pressure of the other station. If both pressures are missing, I used the standard pressure 1013.25 mbar. If the temperature of a station is missing, then I calcualted the temperture of the altitude of the station, which is calculated from the pressure at the station, using the barometric formulas of the International Standard Atmosphere.

Red numbers indicate that one of the pressure measurement is missing, which is required for the calculalation of the altitude and correct refraction coefficient and temperature gradient. In such cases the other provided pressure is used or if none is given the standard pressure at sea level 1013.25 mbar is used, which still may result in good enough realistic values for refraction. But take the red values with caution.

Dist
distance between the Stations.
ζ
reduced zenith angle measurements. This is the angle from the base of a station measured from the vertical down to the base of the other station in view. This angles are derived from the observed zenith angles as listed here.
P
atmospheric pressure in mbar, calculated from the pressure given in mmHg. If no pressure is provided for one station, then the pressure of the other station is copied. If no pressure is provided for both stations, then standard pressure at sea level 1013.25 mbar is used. If a pressure is not provided from measurements, it is listed in blue color and the derived refraction calculations are listed in red color to indicate that this values may not be as accurate as the black ones.
T
temperture in °C. If no temperature is providet, it is derived using the model of the International Standard Atmosphere from the pressure altitude. In this case the temperature is listed in blue color.
Elev
calculated altitude of the stations from the air pressure using the International Standard Atmosphere model. Because this pressure is not corrected for sea level pressure the calculated altitudes are only estimates. But this values are only used to estimate the temperature if it is not provided.
Rapparend
calculated apparent radius of the earth. Due to refraction, for any model, the earth appears as a globe with radius Rapparent. This size is the observation, derived from the zenith angle measurement. It's an observation that holds for Globe and Flat Earth model. But both models have different explanations for this appearance, i.e. different refraction that require different temperature gradients.
a
calculated radius scale factor that states how much bigger the apparent radius R' of the earth is than its expected geometrical radius R: a = R' / R. A common value used is a = 7/6 = 1.167.
k
calculated refraction coefficient for both models. This amount of refraction is required to produce the observed zenith angles, given for the Globe and Flat Earth model respectively.
dT/dh
calculated tempertaure gradient for both models: This temperature gradient is required to produce the observed zenith angles, which are affected by refraction.

Note that the temperture gradient is required to be about the same for every altitude, because the earth appears as a globe with a certain apparent radius from any altitude.

As we can see the temperature gradient required for the Flat Earth model are physically impossible. The temperture on the Flat Earth model would reach absolute zero below 2000 m altitude. Therefore the earth can not be flat.

Equations

For each pair of observation stations it was given: the distance d, the zenith angles ζ, pressure P in mmHg and temperature T in °C. If pressure or temperature was not provided, they were assumed like described above.

Altitude from Air Pressure

Using the Barometric Formulas of the International Standard Atmosphere, which is based on empirical average measurements, we can calculate an estimation for an altitude h from a measured air pressure as follows:

I wrote a Python script that reads the raw data provided by McToon from a file in CSV format and compiles the data into the table above.
